Steampunk Academy Award Winners

An amazing event happened last night… yes, the Academy Awards took place, but more importantly, two Steampunk-related movie actually won awards!

Sweeney Todd won “Best Art Direction”, beating out “The Golden Compass” in the same category. Additionally, the Italian duo of Francesca Lo Schiavo and Dante Feretti also won this award in 1989, for another Steampunk classic, Baron Munchausen.

The Golden Compass (yes, I know its the French poster, but at least it has an airship…) received an Oscar for Best Visual Effects (and an nomination for Best Art Direction), beating out “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Transformers” for the statue.

Could it be that Hollywood might be seeing an emergence of the Steampunk genre as a viable option to the regular pededantic productions that have been served up in the past? One can only hope!
